2012 Westfield Harpsichord Competition repertoire

Round I:

J. S. Bach: one Invention and one Sinfonia in the same key, either BWV 782 and 797 in G minor, or BWV783 and 798 in A major, or

     BWV 786 and 801 in B minor

Louis Marchand: the two Courantes from the D minor Suite (1702)

Domenico Scarlatti: a pair of contrasting sonatas (one of which should be technically brilliant) in any keys

 

Round II:

Louis Couperin: the Pièces in C minor, D major, or E minor (each set with an appropriate prelude) - One of the following:

      either William Byrd: “Walsingham”

      or Thomas Tomkins: “Barafostus’ Dream”

      or Giles Farnaby: “Up Tails All”

—  Johann Jacob Froberger: a toccata from the Libro secondo di toccate . . .1649;

      plus the “Tombeau sur la mort de Monsieur Blancheroche”

 

Round III

Girolamo Frescobaldi: “Toccata Undecima” from Il secondo libro di toccate . . . 1637

J. S. Bach: Partita I in B-flat major, BWV 825

François Couperin: a set of pieces selected from within one Ordre from either Book III or Book IV (15 minutes maximum)

One of the following: C. P. E. Bach: from the six Württemberg Sonatas of 1744, either

     W49/1 in A minor (H30) or W49/5 in E-flat major (H34);

     or Joseph Haydn: from the Divertimenti da Clavicembalo (Sonatas) of 1774-6, either Hob. XVI: 28 in E-flat major

     (NG#26; Henle II/p.70; WU no.43)

     or Hob. XVI: 32 in B minor (NG#30; Henle II/p.116; WU no.47)

 

Candidates are expected to play from facsimiles or the most up-to-date scholarly editions.
